2017 Service Project Update

“There is no real peace, there is no real happiness in anything in heaven or on the earth, except to those who serve the Lord.” (Teachings of Presidents of the Church: Brigham Young, (1997), 183–91)

Each year at our annual Brigham Young Granddaughters Association luncheon, we like to gather donations for a good cause. In past years, we have gathered food, clothes, coats, cleaning supplies, etc for places like the Road Home and the Refugee Center.

This year, we asked our cousins to gather diapers and wipes to donate to the Crisis Nursery in Midvale, Utah. We had an outstanding turnout! The donation totaled a value of more than $500 in diapers and wipes.

What most association members don’t get to see, however, is what happens to the donations after the luncheon is over.

Hi! My name is Jayne Ann Osborne. I was elected to the BYGA Board at this year’s luncheon. One of the first things I got to do as a newly elected board member was go with my mom (also on the board) to donate the diapers and wipes we had collected to the Crisis Nursery.

We packed all of the diapers and wipes into the back of my mom’s van after the luncheon and drove to Midvale. We pulled up to the Crisis Nursery and knocked on the door. A worker appeared and asked if she could help us. Yes! We told her we had a carload of diapers and wipes to donate. She had us fill out a donation form, then let us walk through the Nursery on our way back out to get the diapers and wipes.

There was such a special spirit in that place. There were only two women there tending to the children, but I could feel the presence of unseen angels also in attendance. The children were so sweet. They asked us what we were doing there. We told them we were there to bring them some diapers and wipes. “Eeewww!!! That’s just gross!” shouted one of the little girls.

We laughed and told her they hadn’t been used yet, silly!

We stacked all of the boxes and packages of diapers and wipes on the front porch. The kids were so excited! They opened right up and started telling us all about how one kid was great at soccer, another wanted to share her toy phone, and another just wanted a hug.

It was such a special experience! I am so grateful I got to be a part of that brief service opportunity.

Thank you so much to everyone who participated in this year’s donation collection! Those diapers and wipes are so needed, and your donations really did make a difference in the lives of these and other sweet children. I hope you know that you put smiles on faces, and warmed special hearts that day. The good that small actions make is absolutely incalculable.
